Our group has never been nor will it be a fundraising vehicle. Our primary focus remains to research and create social networking opportunities. However, as we continue to grow, I begin to realize how much impact we could make if we act collectively. Looking back at 2008, our members spent nearly $40,000 on entertainment, culture and outdoor events. Imagine what difference we could make if 10% of our funds were directed to programs that matter to our community? How about 50%? 100%? Here are some facts I gathered from Chicago Cares:
- $25 buys art supplies for a senior companionship and painting project
- $50 buys science experiment supplies for low-income children who attend science educational programs
- $100 helps turn a barren lot into a productive vegetable garden
- $800 enables fifty kids from disadvantaged neighborhoods to participate in an educational field trip
In 2009, while we continued to focus on events that facilitate "interactions" among members, we also carefully selected fun and affordable fundraisers that channel our funds to foster positive change in our community. Here is a list of events we have hosted in 2009.
